Max Handwerck "Bebe
Elite"
Darling character baby by Max Handwerck measures 14"
tall. She has a perfect bisque head with dark brown
sleep eyes. Bebe has both hair and painted lashes. Some
of the hair lashes are missing on both eyes - more so on
the right. She has multi stroke eyebrows and an open
mouth with 4 little teeth and a tongue. She has a
slight nose rub. Bebe is on 5 piece bent limb
composition body with original finish and is in good
condition. There is a big toe rub/chip on the right
foot. Her pate has been replaced and she is wearing an
antique/vintage mohair wig. The outfit is not original
but it suits her very well - cotton under slip and
diapers, crocheted booties, organdy dress and bonnet.
Her markings are: Max Handwerck Bebe Elite 286/2. In
checking Blue Book values, starting with the most recent
and going back, it was not until Blue Book #12 that I
found the 14-16" Bebe Elite listed. Newer Blue Books
only noted the 21" size. I am not certain but that
perhaps indicates that this size is more difficult to
find.

18" Roche
Mary with wood body
This is a lovely
cabinet size doll by Lynn and Michael Roche of England.
Mary measures 18" in height. Her head and hands are
bisque. The body is carved wood and fully jointed. She
was made in 1993 and her tag states she is number 74 in
an edition of 200.
I have a smaller
bisque bodied Mary, which i think are quite common. This
is the only wood bodied Mary I have seen. Of the Roche
dolls i have seen, she seems unusual with her dark hair
and shorter bobbed style.

Gertrude Florian
"Mardi Gras"
Mardi Gras was
created by NIADA artist Gertrude Florian. She measures
16" and is made from what seems to be a type of
composition that was particular to the design and art of
dolls by Gertrude Florian.
While she is not jointed, Mardi Gras does have an
armature and her arms and legs may be bent and posed.
Wig is human hair and the face painting is wonderfully
delicate. I believe Mardi Gras was given as a Convention
souvenir and was outfitted by many "moms" to their
individual taste. This Mardi Gras is wearing a cotton
half slip and a long satin gown with beadwork trim.
Head, bust, lower arms and legs are made from the hard
compo like material and her body is cloth.

Abigail Adams by
Diana Lence Crosby
Diana Lence Crosby is
a NIADA artist and she was the creator of this wonderful
remembrance of Abigail Adams. I think this doll was
probably a regional souvenir for the UFDC. She may have
come, as a kit, and each doll was put together and
dressed by individual owner.
Abigail stands 17.5" tall. She has porcelain head/bust,
lower arms and legs and has been prettily painted. Her
outfit is exquisite! Very authentic to Colonial times
with multiple layers and separate bodice from skirt.
She is in
excellent condition with no chips or cracks. Costume is
worth the entire price!

Freundlich
Sailor-Composition-All Original
Wonderful, all original
Freundlich Military Doll,
circa 1942 is an all
composition doll. According
to Jan Foulk's newest book
of values the Freundlich
Novelty Corp, was based in
NY, NY from 1923 on. They
are remembered for making
some very interesting dolls.
At the time of production
they were inexpensive dolls.
My experience with
composition dolls has been
that the "less expensive"
compo seems to have held up
better in the test of time.
This sailor is no exception.
His composition is in
excellent condition with
only a hint of crazing.
The military dolls were
produced about 1942 and
stand 15" tall. Jan Foulke
values one in good condition
at $225-275.00. This sailor
stands 15" tall. His compo
is in excellent condition,
for the age, with only a
hint of crazing. His outfit
is all original and is also
in very good to excellent
condition. You may see the
detail of the costume in the
pictures.

but the rocker has been
fixed so they are now set
open. She has a beautiful
creamy complexion with good
modeling. Brows are
multi-stroked, painted lower
lashes and real upper
lashes. Her mouth is open
with 4 teeth visible.

good condition.

Theriault's catalogue. I
believe her under garments
are original to the doll
- her provenance was
stitched to under garments
when I purchased the doll.

in the picture. Her bisque
is without cracks or chips.
