VCR Set Up
VCR Tips
VCR Tips provide basic diagrams and instructions for setup and use of a VCR with
our RG device, located in your home. In most cases, the setup will require 3 remote
control devices per TV/VCR combo: 1 RG remote, which is provided with our RG;
1 VCR remote, which comes with store purchased VCR’s; and 1 TV remote, which
comes with store purchased TV’s.
For each setup, be sure that the coaxial cable routes out of the RG and through
your VCR before connecting to your TV. Also try to program your VCR with the current
date and time, following instructions provided with your VCR.
In all cases, when you are finished using your VCR, it will be necessary for you
to revert back to the BASIC TV/VCR setup as shown below.
Basic TV/VCR Set Up
Using the illustration above, place and wire your VCR between the RG and TV in
each instance of a TV/VCR combination. Also, check the back of the VCR to be sure
the “TV” switch is correctly positioned, and that the VCR and TV are
correctly tuned (using remote controls that came with each device).
To watch TV and change channels, use the RG remote. It is not necessary to have
the VCR turned on to watch TV.
Playing a VCR Tape and Recording and Watching
the Same Show

To play a tape: on TV-1, simply insert the tape and press play. On TV-2
and/or TV-3, change the TV channel to 3 (using the TV remote or the buttons on
the TV), insert tape and press play.
To record and watch the same show: follow the same TV/VCR tuning instructions
as illustrated above. Then using the RG remote control, change the channel to
the show you wish to watch/record, insert a tape and press record on your VCR.
Be sure to re-tune the VCR according to the Basic TV diagram
when finished recording.
Watching One Show While Recording Another at
the Same Time

This function requires the use of two TV Streams and two RG remotes.
Follow the simple illustration above for tuning your VCR and TV. Then use the
second RG remote control (from TV-2 or TV-3) to find the show you wish to record,
insert a tape and press record on your VCR. Then using your VCR remote, press
your TV/VCR button OFF.
Now, using your RG remote control from TV-1, you can change the television to
watch a different show.
Note: it is a good idea to label your RG remote controls before moving
them throughout the house.
Be sure to re-tune the VCR according to the Basic TV diagram
when finished recording.
Timed Program Recording While at Home or Away
with TV Off

Using your VCR instruction booklet, follow instructions for programming time,
date and timed program recording.
Program your VCR to record channel 4. Then use the RG remote to auto tune (see
Automatic Tune instructions).
Important: If you wish to record a program while the TV is turned off,
then use the TV power button on the face of the TV. Do not use the green power
button on the RG remote, as this will turn off the Stream to the VCR as well.
Recording on the Second TV (Stream 2) While
Watching the Same Channel
Turn the TV set on by the TV remote or manually on the TV set. Tune the TV to
channel 4. Then Turn your VCR power button by the remote or manually on the VCR,
then hit the TV/VCR button on the remote. While you still have the VCR remote,
tune the TV to channel 7 (second stream), you should have a clear picture. Then
use the Cable TV remote and tune to what ever channel you would like to record.
You can then push the record button on the remote or set the timer to come on
and record.
Recording on the Second TV While Away
Follow the steps above: set the timer on the VCR to come on and record on channel
7 at the correct time you want. Tune to the channel you want to record by the
Cable TV remote. Then you can turn VCR off and then turn the TV set off by the
TV remote or manually on the set.
