| What
is DSL and how fast is it?
DSL (digital subscriber line) is a dedicated Internet service that is
available for both home and business applications. Customers must have
telephone service with Yadkin Valley Telephone and must use Yadkin Valley's
Internet service. While Yadkin Valley does not guarantee a minimum speed,
our DSL service is capable of speeds of up to 1.5 mbps down stream and
384 kbps up stream.
What
does DSL cost?
DSL Standard Internet 512/384 for $29.95, Residential High Speed DSL 768/384 for $39.95 or a speed of 1.5/384 for
$44.95 and $79.95 for 3 Meg service, in addition to your regular telephone service. The monthly fee
includes unlimited Internet access. The normal charge for single computer
installation is $99.95 with the customer providing the modem.
Currently the installation fee is waived and
a modem will be supplied as part of the installation promotion with a
one-year commitment. Early termination fees apply.
Do
I need another telephone line?
No. DSL is installed on your regular telephone line. You may continue
to use your phone line for regular telephone calls or faxing, even while
using your DSL Internet connection. Our service is considered to be "always
on".
What
are the minimum computer requirements?
PC requirements:
Pentium 400 MHz processor (or equivalent), 64 Mbytes RAM (or equivalent)
and Microsoft Windows 2000 (or equivalent) or above.
Macintosh
requirements: Power PC (or equivalent) and Mac OS 7.1
(or equivalent).
Requires a Network
Card (or a computer that will allow a network card).
CD-ROM drive required.
What
kind of special wiring do I need?
You must have a regular telephone jack (RJ-11) and electrical outlet located
near your computer. Standard telephone wiring works in most cases. However,
certain wiring schemes (such as a daisy chain) will not work. If changes
in your wiring are required, we can provide that service for an additional
charge.
How
do I get DSL installed?
You may request DSL service by calling our business office at (336)
463-5022. Each customer's telephone line will be checked
in preparation for installation of DSL and then an appointment made for
installation. Our qualified installers will come to your home to do the
installation. You will be required to sign an Internet Service Agreement.
This agreement can be viewed at www.yadtel.net.
Do
I need to buy any special equipment?
We strongly recommend that you purchase and use a quality surge arrestor
to provide protection both through your electrical and telephone access.
Modern electrical
power wiring contains three wires; hot, neutral and ground. The telephone
line contains two wires: tip and ring. Surges can take place between any
of these wires, so you need a surge arrestor that takes care of both power
and telephone wires.
You can find surge
arrestors sold at places that sell computers, or if you wish, Yadkin Valley
can provide you with a high quality surge arrestor. We carry a unit that
is available to existing Yadkin Valley customers for a special price of
$29.95. This unit was evaluated and recommended by an association of power
companies, whose experts have extensive knowledge in this area.
Can
I control access to inappropriate websites?
Yes, you can. Filtering is available as an add-on for only $5 per month
and blocks millions of pages of undesirable material. The service is on 24 hours/day, seven days/week and can’t
be turned off by children. There’s no software to buy and no downloading
of updates to your computer.
Can
I have DSL on my laptop and if so, what additional equipment do I need?
Yes. You will need a network card on your laptop. This can be obtained
from your local computer supplier. Your laptop can then be plugged into
the DSL modem in your home.
Can
I have two computers on my DSL service?
Yes, you can. This will require network wiring and additional equipment.
You may choose to install your own home network or purchase services from
an outside vendor.
Can
I access the Internet with my account when I’m away from home?
Yes. Roaming access is available for all types of accounts on a dial-up
basis. Customer will need to create a dialup profile with the following information.
Dial up number: 1-888-903-7662 (there will be a charge of $0.15 per minute for using this number.

Can
I get my e-mail when I’m away from home?
Yes, as long as you have access to the Internet. Just visit the website
webmail.yadtel.net. You will be prompted to login using your user name and
password.
Can
I connect to my office from home?
One way to do this is called a "virtual private network." A
VPN is a secure, private communication tunnel between two or more devices
across a public network (like the Internet). These VPN devices can be
either a computer running VPN software or a special device like a VPN
enabled router. It allows your home computer to be connected to your office
network or can allow two home computers in different locations to connect
to each other over the Internet.
What
if I need a static IP address?
The only reason you would need a static IP (Internet Protocol) address
is if you wish to turn your computer into some sort of server, or if you
want the convenience of knowing that every time you connect, you’re
going to use the same IP address. You can purchase a static IP address
from Yadkin Valley. There will be an initial setup fee of $30.00 and a
monthly recurring cost of $5.00.
